Volume Locker

Ever accidentally change the volume settings on your Android device, whether that be while using your device or while your device sits in your pocket? Volume Locker is an app that helps prevent accidental changes to volume settings on Android by forcing users to confirm a volume settings change.

What happens is when you have Volume Locker enabled and you accidentally or intentionally change the volume on your device (e.g. from silent to vibrate or increasing the volume) Volume Locker displays a notification in the notification bar or displays a pop up (you control which one you want to see); you have to confirm the volume change via the notification/pop up within X seconds (default is 30 seconds but you can customize it) otherwise Volume Locker will undo the volume settings change. Volume Locker has settings to make it play well with other apps, such as the camera app or Google Navigation, so it doesn’t interfere when it shouldn’t.

Contact Remover is free with no ads. Contact Remover Plus costs $1.99 (ad-free) and adds more features such as select contacts by account, merge contacts, move contacts and copy contacts.

Deficit Hawk (US Fed Budget)

Think you can do a better job than the American government at reducing the US budget deficit? Deficit Hawk is a game that allows you to do just that. With Deficit Hawk you can apply new taxes and and new budget cuts to see if you can bring the deficit down. You can select as many taxes and cuts as you like; and each tax or cut has an optional explanation as to what it is. All data (the taxes and cuts) in the game is based on information provided by the Congressional Budget Office in a document published in 2011 called Reducing The Deficit: Spending And Revenue Options.

Smart Lock (App/Media)

Smart Lock is an app locker that allows you to restrict access to your apps using a lock pattern or a four digit pin code. What makes Smart Lock different than other app lockers are the features it has in addition to locking apps. What features, you ask? Well in addition to locking apps, Smart Lock can: “fake crash” apps making whoever opens the app think the app crashed; protect media files; allows for recovery of pin code using a question and answer; has the ability to hide itself from the app tray/launcher; can lock internal/USB storage; chose specific apps to lock only on Monday-Friday or Monday-Saturday and/or during specific hours of the day; and more. There appears to even be a feature to protect contacts which will be added in future versions.

Smart Lock Free (App/Media) is fully functionality and free but is ad-supported. Smart Lock (App/Media) is paid and ad-free.

What2Do – To do list manager

What2Do is a to-do list manager with a twist. Unlike traditional to-do list managers, with What2Do users do not create a list of what they need to do. Rather, with What2Do users can schedule tasks to automatically happen. Tasks that can be schedule with What2Do are: Sounds an alarm; send an SMS (text message); make a call; send an e-mail; run an app; send a file via e-mail; put device on silent mode; take device off silent mode; turn on airplane mode. Tasks are schedule to happen at a specific time and can be schedule to happen daily, on one specific date, or on specific days of the week

Take note because of the nature of what the app does, What2Do requests sensitive and potentially dangerous app permissions such as send SMS messages, directly call phone numbers, read contact data, and more. Plus in order to use the e-mail feature you must enter your Gmail username and password into the app. If you are not comfortable with giving What2Do these permissions and/or entering your Gmail username and password, don’t get What2Do. Personally speaking, I’m not comfortable with giving What2Do the permissions it requests nor with entering my Gmail username and password; as such, I won’t personally be keeping the app after I am done testing What2Do. dotTech and Ashraf are not responsible for any gain or harm incurred by downloading What2Do.

Do it (Tomorrow)

Are you one of those people that just can’t schedule events days, weeks, or months in advance yet still desire an app to help you keep track of stuff you need to do? Like What2Do, Do it (Tomorrow) is another to-do list manager with a twist. Instead of allowing you to schedule tasks, events, etc. in advance, Do it (Tomorrow) is specifically designed for people who want to focus on today… with the ability to push off tasks until tomorrow.

With Do it (Tomorrow) users create simple tasks lists for “Today” and “Tomorrow”. These lists are very simple and don’t involve any sort of scheduling or reminders — they are akin to the types of lists you would wrote for yourself on paper: you simply type in the tasks you want to have done. When a task has been completed, tapping on it marks it out indicating it has been finished. If, for whatever reason, you do not do a task today, with a click of a button you can push that task off until tomorrow (i.e. send it to the “Tomorrow” list); and vice versa, if you really want to be diligent. (Tasks on the lists can also be completely deleted or reordered.) As the next day arrives, the “Today” list goes away with the “Tomorrow” list taking its place and a new empty list for “Tomorrow” appearing. If you would like the ability to sync your lists across devices, you can sync through Do it (Tomorrow)’s free web version http://tomorrow.do/.

Do it (Tomorrow) is free with the option to buy small, medium, and large widgets for $0.99 each or all three widgets for $2.25 via in-app purchases.

Price: Free, $2.25

Version discovered: v1.6.0

Requires: Android 2.1 and up

WinText

Corrupted files can suck. What happens if you accidentally somehow corrupt your only draft of your essay worth 50% of your grade!? You realize that you should use Google Docs. You grab a program that extracts readable text from just about any kind of document — a program like WinText.

Try WinText both on a non-corrupted and a corrupted Word DOC file and you will see it is able to extract the text beautifully. And it’s not just Word documents it works on: anything that contains unicode characters can and will have text extracted from it by WinText.

If you need to quickly know how many computers/devices are on your wireless network, NirSoft’s Wireless Network Watcher may be for you. It records the number of times a machine has been seen on the network, the machine’s name, its MAC address, and a bunch more useful information.

Need to see if your phone is on the network? There’s Murata Manufacturing, right there! Your tablet? Palm, Inc is right where you expect it. Wait, where’s my server? I’ll be right back.

Sizer

Some times, you need a window to be a certain size. Be it 1024×768 to make sure documents look good on small monitors or 800×600 to make sure they fit in small places like an article or documentation, it can be a hassle to resize windows to just the right size. Sizer makes resizing window easy by adding a sub-menu to the right-click context menu (the one that pops when you right-click on the minimize/maximize/close buttons) that allows you to set windows to certain predefined resolutions automatically, even moving them or using your own custom resolutions with custom shortcuts.

Note that the current stable release, v3.3, does not work on 64-bit Windows. However, developer builds that support 64-bit Windows have been released.

Software for March 26, 2012

tinySpell

Does it ever annoy you when you’re typing something up in a program without spell check and you can’t figure out if you’re spelling a word right? Be annoyed no more! With tinySpell you can automatically check the spelling both in any program and when you copy text to the clipboard.

When you start typing, tinySpell will constantly monitor every word for spelling errors. When it finds one, it will beep and a little menu will appear. That menu will most often have the correct spelling of whatever you want to spell.

Truthfully, the omnipresent yellow notification windows can be a bit distracting and the beep a little annoying. Luckily, tinySpell makes it very easy to disable spell check: just right click on the tray icon and click Disable tinySpell. While not something you’d use every day, as a portable app, tinySpell is great to carry around for use at a moment’s notice.

Sticky Notes Taskbar Hider

This is a very niche program, but is still quite useful for those it’s made for: you can hide the sticky notes taskbar icon while keeping the sticky notes open!

In the picture to the left, you’ll notice the only program I have open is Firefox. Normally, with all those stickies open, I’d be treated to an unnecessary and somewhat useless sticky notes icon. And, with SNTH, I can use a simple keyboard shortcut to disable and re-enable it all the time.

This super simple app fulfills a purpose without being too bloated and without being overly complex. It’s great!

inSSIDer

If your wifi is a bit slow, it could be that the channels it’s on are already occupied. While generally, multiple signals can occupy the same space, it can cause small issues and make your experience less fun. With inSSIDer, you can quickly glance at information about the networks around your area and even look at networks in your general area.

Along with showing you which channels have the most networks, inSSIDer also shows the security and strength of each network. From this, you can tell which channels your wireless network might be the best on, and how well secured yours and your neighbor’s networks are.

The other day at work I overhead the following conversation:

Person1 with a new laptop that has not been connected to the wireless network yet:

“Do you know what the password is to the wireless Internet?”

Person2 with an older laptop that is connected to the wireless network:

“No I don’t remember. It is so long and confusing here – it is hard to remember.”

Now that I think back to that moment, I wish that I had known about WirelessKey View (I just recently found out about it while I was roaming Nirsoft’s website). WKV is a splendid little tool that allows you to view the password/key of the wireless network (WEP/WPA only) your computer is connected to:

2009-03-15_1527091

Actually I should clarify. WKV reveals the password/key of all the networks you have connected to in the past (as long as you still have that network information stored on your computer which you should unless you specifically deleted it). However there is one small catch to this program: WKV can only retrieve the password/key of networks that were stored using Windows wireless connection service (‘Wireless Zero Configuration’ service for Windows XP and ‘WLAN AutoConfig’ service for Windows Vista). In other words if you used, for example, Linksys Network Monitor to connect to your network instead of Windows then WKV will not be able to find the password/key (I just tested it on my desktop to make sure of this fact). This problem will usually only occur with desktops (because when people install wireless adapters on their desktops they are likely to install the software that comes with the adapter) seeing as most laptops come with built in wireless cards and they use Windows wireless connection service.

WKV is a standalone portable application so all you have to do is unzip it and run the EXE file – no installation required. You can download WKV from the following links:

Software Description

The following is a description of AllMyNotes Organizer Deluxe, as per the developer:

What is AllMyNotes Organizer?

Information surrounds us, it’s everywhere – passwords, hyperlinks, memos, anniversaries, birthdays, numbers, sticky notes, draft letters, pictures, access codes, etc… etc… etc… And there is many software titles aimed to ease data collection and management – contact managers, task lists, reminders, clocks, notes, and a number of others, narrowly targeted uses. Each of these applications is good, but each of them has a limited usage scope, and strictly defined set of fields for data management.

Let us introduce our solution for storing random information – AllMyNotes Organizer! The concept is simple as black and white – keep data of any kind, make it easy to find at any time, and, hide it securely from prying eyes – protect data access by password!

We did our best to remove any limitations – just mix your text with files, images, alarms, tables, tasks (checkboxes)… Create! This is an awesome tool – a universal constructor for basically any kind of data management! The concept is also known as an Outliner concept.

All your Notes stored in a single AllMyNotes Organizer file and can be grouped into flexible virtual folders enabling easy, intuitive access, and instant search at all times.

dotTech Advice

dotTech reviewed AllMyNotes Organizer Deluxe (v1.34) in August of 2010. Here was the final verdict:

For being the new kid on the block, AllMyNotes Organizer Deluxe does a fairly good job of stepping up to the plate and justifying its existence. In other words, AllMyNotes Organizer Deluxe is a good program. However, in my opinion, AllMyNotes Organizer Deluxe still needs a bit more development – needs a few features added – before I can officially recommend this program; plus the developer should rethink the price tag of $35. That said, though, looking at the developer’s development plans for this program, I can see AllMyNotes Organizer Deluxe has the potential to turn into one of the best notes programs out there. Keep an eye on this one.

Since August 2010 AllMyNotes Organizer has been updated with new features added. If you need a program of this kind, give AllMyNotes Organizer a try.

Picture +D

Picture +D is a fun app that creates a 3D image out of a 2D picture. You can either snap a new photo with your camera or load an existing photo into Picture +D. Picture +D does the 2D -> 3D transformation automatically and after it is done you can view the new 3D image using controls such as rotate, pinch to zoom, multi-drag, and multi-rotate. If you aren’t totally happy with how the 3D image turned out, there are some controls you can customize but honestly most people won’t have a clue what the controls mean. Once you have a 3D image you can save it or share it with friends.

Picture +D has a free and paid version. The free version is ad-supported and doesn’t allow you to save images — you can only share images (e-mail images to yourself in this case, if you want to save them). The paid version has all the features of the free version but is ad-free, allows you to save images, and hide/show the original image or QR code at the share screen.

Daily Ab Workout

Daily Ab Workout is an app that guides you through a five, seven and a half, or ten minutes workout routine. Each routine consists of ten exercises; Daily Ab Workout explains how to do each exercise including a simple demonstration video. Daily Ab Workout times you for each exercise based on the length of workout routine you selected and automatically moves onto the next exercise until your whole time is up. And trust me, this may not sound like a lot on paper but these routines actually do help (assuming you do them daily) You won’t turn into a body builder over night but these routines help decrease belly fat and tone your abs.

Daily Ab Workout FREE is ad-supported and only has one set of ten exercises to pick from. If you cough up for the paid version of Daily Ab Workout, you get an ad-free version that has two extra sets of ten exercises to pick from (they aren’t different exercises — they are the same exercises in a different order) plus the ability to randomize.

Software for March 23, 2012

7Files alpha

7Files is a Windows Explorer file browsing replacement that focuses not only on having a greater level of functionality but still the ability to please your eyes. On the functionality end of the spectrum, it supports all the usual tasks such as drag and drop and even some more unusual tasks such as a simple file finding function that allows you to show files from a particular time period and file type, as shown at right.

Besides searching by date and type, it can also do search within a folder. Rather than Windows 7′s built-in search, which claims to use an index but still manages to be slow, 7File’s is built into the current view and lets you just type. The results will be a pared down version of the original view rather than a whole new one.

Unfortunately, while 7Files is quite nice and very usable, it can’t be a replacement for Windows Explorer. It actually runs alongside Windows Explorer, as Explorer not only controls folder browsing but critical aspects such as the start menu and taskbar. Even with this, however, 7Files is great, even if only for searching for specific files or folders.

IrfanView

IrfanView is a lightweight image viewer that’s supported even on the old computer you got rid of ten years ago. And not only is it lightweight, it can read almost any image you throw at it: almost 90 formats are supported if I counted correctly.

Besides being the mother of all image viewers, it can also perform some simple edits on some formats. (Only 20.) It can losslessly rotate JPEGs, stitch panoramas, adjust colors, convert to grayscale, and much more. While these are only basic edits, the ability to perform them on a slower, older machine alone is something that could win many over. Need to adjust your parent’s vacation photos? Rather than pull out GIMP, show them how to do it.

IrfanView is a giant program stuffed into a tiny space. Even if I spent a few years with it, I’d probably still be discovering cool new things to do with it!

PDFCreator

“Hey, can I get that as a PDF?”

Now what are you supposed to do? Most people don’t have a copy of Adobe Acrobat lying around to create a PDF with. However, with just a minute of your time, you can install a PDF printer like PDFCreator to make a PDF from anything with a Print button. This means your Word documents, web pages, pictures… anything!

Note that on oddly formatted things like web pages, PDFCreator will not create a very good PDF. This is just like printing a web page on a real printer: either something gets squished, something gets cut off, or whatever. However, when “printing” a document as a PDF, it will do a pretty much perfect job.

During installation, be sure to uncheck the toolbar offer.

Permission Friendly Apps

Permissions Friendly Apps is an app that aims to help you analyze what system access permissions apps on your device have.

Permission Friendly Apps scans your Android device for all installed apps and analyzes the system access permissions these apps request; it then rates apps into three categories: Apps with blue hearts require no permissions, apps with black hearts require only “normal” permissions and no “dangerous” permissions, and apps with an exclamation mark triangle contain one or more “dangerous” permissions. Clicking on an app in Permission Friendly Apps’ list breaks down the permissions asked by that specific app and marks each individual permission using black hearts (for “normal” permissions) and exclamation mark triangles (for “dangerous” permissions).

What permissions does Permission Friendly Apps consider to be dangerous? Permissions such as Internet access, ability to send SMS, ability to access SD card contents, etc. — the types of permissions a malicious app would abuse.

That said, however, Permissions Friendly Apps isn’t a security software. Just because an app is marked with an exclamation mark triangle or has a permission that is considered to be “dangerous” does not mean the app is necessarily bad or malicious. Many apps legitimately require permissions that Permissions Friendly Apps considers to be “dangerous”, such as Internet access, sending SMS, accessing SD card contents, etc. The point of Permissions Friendly Apps isn’t to flag malicious apps but rather to bring your attention to what permissions apps are asking for. If you see an app with the exclamation mark triangle, you shouldn’t instantly uninstall that app; instead, you should review that app’s permissions and determine if the permissions required by that app are reasonable and if you trust the developer of that app. If you determine the app is trustworthy, you can mark the app as “trusted”; if you determine the app isn’t trustworthy, you can uninstall the app directly from within Permissions Friendly Apps.

Warrantify

Warrantify is the Android app for Warrantify.com, the service that helps you keep track of your product warranties. With Warrantify you scan in a receipt (you take a picture of the receipt with your camera), input the date of purchase, shop the product was purchased at, product name, manufacturer name, product model, length of warranty, and price of product. Warrantify then starts tracking that product warranty, giving you alerts when the warranty is about to expire. You can input as many receipts as you desire.

Once you have a warranty inputted into Warrantify, the data is stored in your Warrantify account; and you have the ability to view information about the product that you inputted, view the original receipt that you scanned, claim the warranty (works only for electronic warranty partners of Warrantify), extend the warranty (works only for electronic warranty partners of Warrantify), and look at accessories for the product.

To use Warrantify you need to register an account (which is free) and need an active Internet connection.

Unplug and Reconnect™

Ever wanted some “me time” or quality time with friends or family without the hassle of your phone buzzing every five minutes? Unplug and Reconnect is an app that helps you do exactly that. With Unplug and Reconnect users schedule times and dates when they don’t want to be bothered by their phones. When that date/time arrives, Unplug and Reconnect automatically silences the phone, puts it on vibrate, puts it in airplane mode, or rejects all incoming calls — you pick what you want Unplug and Reconnect to do for each specific scheduled event.  When the scheduled event is over (you specify a start and end for each event), Unplug and Reconnect automatically reverts your phone back to normal.

Users are allowed to create as many events as they like. Events can be scheduled to repeat daily, every weekday, weekly, monthly, or yearly; and users can get alerts of a schedule event five, ten, or fifteen minutes before it is schedule to occur. If you are a Facebook or Twitter user, Unplug and Reconnect has the ability to automatically post a status update/tweet about your scheduled event so you can let your friends/followers know you will not be available for that specific period of time. If you opt to use reject call mode, Unplug and Reconnect has the ability to automatically send a text message to callers telling them you are busy (you can customize the message to say whatever you want).

Choose Browser

On my PC I often juggle between browsers, using Firefox as my main work horse but opting to use Opera when I do research. Do you perform the same juggling act on your Android? Or rather, would you like to perform the same juggling act on your Android? Maybe it is because one browser (e.g. Skyfire) plays Flash videos while other browsers don’t; or you like using a browser that doesn’t necessarily display pages all correctly and would like the ability to easily switch to another browser when the need arises. Whatever the case may be, Choose Browser is a tiny app that helps you move between browsers with ease.

Once installed, Choose Browser sits in the “Share” menu of your device. Whenever you are on a page you want to view in another browser, open this “Share” menu (typically access by hitting the Menu button on your device -> Share or long pressing on a URL -> Share) and tap Choose Browser. When you tap Choose Browser a list of all installed browsers on your device will pop up; tap the browser you want to open the page in and Choose Browser will open the page in the browser you selected. It is as simple as that.

0 Backup

0 Backup is an app specifically designed to backup the data (files and folders) stored on the internal storage/SD card of Android devices. 0 Backup wirelessly backs up the content of internal storage/SD card to your Windows computer; all you have to do is make sure your Android is connected to the Windows PC on the same WiFi network and make sure your Windows PC has a shared folder (aka network shares, network folder, etc.)

By default 0 Backup is set to backup the contents of the SD card (i.e. files and folders in the /sdcard/ folder) but you can easily have it backup your whole internal storage, if you so wish it. Other features include an exclude that allows you to exclude specific folders from being included in a backup; removing backed up items on the “server” (the “server” is your Windows PC that has the shared folder) that are no longer on your Android; and only doing backups when device is charging.

Since 0 Backup makes use of Windows’ shared folders capabilities, you don’t need to install any extra software on Windows to use 0 Backup. However, it can be a bit confusing on how to setup 0 Backup so the developer has a handy guide (which includes screenshots) on his/her website showing you exactly what you need to do on your Windows PC.

0 Backup comes in two editions, Silver and Gold. 0 Backup Silver is free and ad-supported; it has all the features mentioned above. 0 Backup Gold is paid, ad-free, and has additional features such as automatic backups (scheduling backups).

Price: Free, $1.96
